Waughs Well: Restoring a Landmark, Growing Our Connection to the Land

At The Eden-field Project, our mission is to reconnect people with the land and the stories it holds. Our recent work restoring the Waughs Well information board is a perfect example of how small actions can nurture both heritage and community spirit.

Why Waughs Well Matters to Eden-field

Waughs Well sits high above Edenfield, surrounded by wild moorland and steeped in local history. It’s dedicated to Edwin Waugh, a Lancashire poet who captured the heart and dialect of our region. For years, the well and its sign have welcomed walkers, educators, and nature-lovers—making it a natural fit for our mission at The Eden-field Project – celebrating outdoor learning and community heritage.

Answering the Call for Action

For years, the Waughs Well information board was falling into a sorry state—damaged by weather and neglect, with some of its story (info) lost. So we dedcide to step up, and hike up there with a new sign.

How We Helped

  • Site Assessment: We visited Waughs Well and collaborated with The Edwin Waughs Dialect Society to recreate the sign.
  • Hands-on Restoration: Working with local businesses and volunteers, we recreated the sign and information on it.
  • Installed It: And then with a small group, we headed up there to install it one warn, sunny day.

Why Restoration Matters

For us, this project was about more than fixing a sign. It was about honouring Edwin Waugh’s legacy, supporting outdoor learning, and showing what’s possible when a community comes together to care for its shared spaces. The restored board now helps visitors—whether they’re running a regular visitors, leading a group walk, or just exploring—connect with the land’s story.

Visit, Learn, and Get Involved

We invite you to visit Waughs Well, take in the story, and experience the landscape that inspired generations. At Eden-field, we’re always looking for new ways to blend outdoor activity, education, and heritage. If you’d like to get involved in future projects, or have ideas for nurturing our local spaces, we’d love to hear from you.
